Pope Leo XIV appoints new Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda

Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda

The Catholic Church in Uganda has welcomed the appointment of a new Apostolic Nuncio following the announcement by Pope Leo XIV that Archbishop Tomasz Krzysztof Grysa will serve as the Holy Father’s representative in the country.

The appointment, announced on May 14, 2026, marks a significant moment for the Church in Uganda as Archbishop Grysa takes over from Archbishop Luigi Bianco, who was transferred to serve as Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Apostolic Delegate to Kosovo after six years of service in Uganda.

Archbishop Tomasz Grysa, a native of Poznań, Poland, brings extensive diplomatic and pastoral experience to his new mission. Born on October 16, 1970, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Poznań on May 25, 1995. He later pursued advanced studies in Canon Law and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 2001.

Throughout his diplomatic ministry, Archbishop Grysa has served in several countries and international missions, including the Russian Federation, India, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, Palestine, and the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York. Prior to his appointment to Uganda, he served as Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, Seychelles, and Mauritius, while also acting as Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and La Réunion.

As Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Grysa will serve as the Pope’s ambassador to Uganda and as a vital link between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in the country. His responsibilities include strengthening relations between the Vatican and the Government of Uganda, supporting the work of the country’s bishops, and promoting the mission of the Church throughout the nation.

Church leaders, clergy, religious communities, and lay faithful across Uganda have welcomed the appointment with joy and optimism. Many have expressed confidence that Archbishop Grysa’s experience in diplomacy and pastoral ministry will help strengthen the Church’s evangelization efforts, educational initiatives, charitable works, and commitment to peace and social development.

The appointment comes at a time when the Catholic Church in Uganda continues to play a major role in education, healthcare, social services, and spiritual formation. The new Apostolic Nuncio is expected to build upon the strong foundation established by his predecessors while fostering closer collaboration between the Vatican and the local Church.

As Archbishop Tomasz Grysa prepares to begin his mission in the Pearl of Africa, Catholics throughout Uganda look forward to his leadership, guidance, and pastoral presence. His appointment reflects the Holy Father’s continued confidence in Uganda’s vibrant Catholic community and its important contribution to the life of the universal Church.

The Church in Uganda now joins the wider Catholic community in praying for Archbishop Grysa as he embarks on this important ministry of service, diplomacy, and communion with the Holy See.
